For breakfast in Nerja, our short answer is this: Kafunè for the best coffee, Brisa Brunch or Good Stuff Café for a slow brunch, and Anahi for a classic Spanish start with orange juice and tostada con tomate. Below are the places we go back to ourselves, what we order and when to go.
Mornings are one of the best parts of a holiday on the Costa del Sol. The town wakes up slowly, the light is soft and nobody is in a hurry. These are the cafés we keep returning to, from serious specialty coffee to simple local terraces.
If you care about coffee, this is the one not to skip. Kafunè takes its coffee seriously, but the feel is relaxed and friendly rather than precious. They serve breakfast and brunch too. Our tip: go in the morning, order a good coffee and take your time over a chia bowl.
A small, cosy specialty coffee spot tucked away in the old town. We love how personal it feels. It is the perfect quiet coffee before you start wandering the old streets towards the Balcón de Europa.
Our pick for a properly lazy late breakfast. Expect coffee, fresh juices, pancakes, yoghurt bowls and gourmet toast in a fresh, modern setting. It is well placed for carrying on to the beach afterwards. Our advice is simple: order a second coffee and do not rush.
A tiny place with a lovely terrace and one of our favourite central spots for a classic Spanish breakfast. Order fresh orange juice, a café con leche and tostada con tomate, and you have the breakfast most locals would recognise.
Friendly and informal, Good Stuff Café is a lovely place to start the day without feeling rushed. You can have a proper breakfast, something light and freshly prepared, or just a good coffee with one of their homemade treats. There are vegetarian and vegan choices too, which helps when everyone in your group wants something slightly different.
A family-owned Swedish café and bakery with sourdough and naturally yeasted breads, buns, cakes, pastries, sandwiches and salads. It makes a lovely breakfast or coffee stop, especially if you like a Scandinavian touch with your morning bun.
Do not be put off by the hotel setting. The large central terrace is excellent for breakfast and coffee, and we often stop here for a coffee and a small sandwich while we are in town. Later in the day it works just as well for snacks, tapas or a cocktail.
If you want something really traditional, make one morning a churros morning. Freshly fried churros with hot chocolate or coffee is a simple, inexpensive ritual, and it shows you a more local side of Nerja. We have written a separate guide to where to have churros in Nerja, including the café we recommend and why it pays to arrive reasonably early.
If you are planning the rest of the day, our guides to the best beaches in Nerja and the Balcón de Europa are good next reads. And for later on, see our favourite restaurants in Nerja.
Some of our favourite breakfasts are not in a café at all. At Casa Joya, the private terrace off the master bedroom is made for a slow breakfast with a view of the sea, and there is a Nespresso machine in the kitchen for the first coffee of the day. Pick up bread and something sweet in town, then take it home. If that sounds like your kind of morning, check availability at Casa Joya.
Fresh orange juice, a café con leche and tostada con tomate, toast with tomato and olive oil. Anahi in the centre does this classic breakfast well. Churros with hot chocolate are the other traditional favourite.
Kafunè Specialty Coffee is our favourite, and Coffee & Flowers in the old town is a small, cosy alternative. Both also suit a quiet start before exploring.
Yes. Good Stuff Café has vegetarian and vegan choices, and brunch spots like Brisa Brunch offer yoghurt bowls, fresh juices and toast. Check current menus before you go.
