The Balcón de Europa is Nerja's iconic viewpoint and the natural centre of town, so almost every visit to Nerja passes through it at some point. It was built on the site of a former fortress and looks straight out over the Mediterranean. Here is how we like to spend a few hours there, from coffee to a sunset drink.
Think of it as a wide promenade that pushes out over the sea, right in the heart of Nerja. Because it stands where a fortress once stood, it has that sense of being the place people have always gathered. Today it is where locals and visitors stroll, stop for photos, eat ice cream and watch the light change over the water.
It is busy in the evenings and lovely in the morning, so it is worth seeing at both ends of the day if you can.
The Balcón is easy to combine with a slow wander through the old town. The narrow streets around it are full of restaurants, little shops and ice-cream shops, and we like to walk without much of a plan, the same way we do in Frigiliana.
If you start in the morning, Coffee & Flowers is a small, cosy specialty coffee spot tucked away in the old town. We love the personal feel and the relaxed atmosphere. It is perfect for a quiet coffee before you explore the streets. For more morning ideas, see our guide to breakfast and coffee in Nerja.
There is no wrong way to do ice cream here. There are several ice-cream shops close to the Balcón, and walking out to the viewpoint with a cone in hand is a very Nerja moment.
Playa de la Calahonda is the small sandy beach beside the Balcón de Europa, tucked between rocky cliffs. It is one of the most central beaches in Nerja and has showers, toilets, lifeguard services, sunbeds and restaurants overlooking the sand. It is perfect when you want a swim without leaving town, and you can go straight from the beach back up to the old streets. Our post on the best beaches in Nerja compares it with the others nearby.
If you are spending time around the Balcón, we recommend a drink at Lamalaka, one of the newer additions to Nerja. The location is right on the Balcón de Europa, which makes it a lovely spot for an aperitif while you enjoy the atmosphere of the square and the sea views. We especially like it for an early evening drink before dinner. It feels stylish without being too formal, and it is a great place to sit back with a cocktail or a glass of wine and watch Nerja go by.
From there you are a short walk from plenty of dinner options. Our guides to sunset drinks in Nerja and a perfect evening in Nerja pick up where this one leaves off.
The centre of Nerja is easiest on foot, but if you drive in, Parking Carabeo is one of the options we recommend because it is relatively central and affordable. Check current rates when you arrive.
Our post on parking and getting around Nerja has more on the options.
In summer, plan walking around the cooler parts of the day. The Balcón is at its best when the heat has gone out of the afternoon.
From our holiday home in Ladera del Mar, just outside the centre of Nerja, the Balcón is a pleasant beach walk or a short drive away, and you come home to quieter streets and your own sea-view terrace. If you would like to see where we live, take a look at our holiday home in Nerja.
It is a viewpoint that pushes out over the Mediterranean like a balcony, right in the centre of Nerja. It was built on the site of a former fortress and is now the town's best-known meeting point.
Yes. Playa de la Calahonda is the small sandy beach right beside the Balcón, between rocky cliffs, with showers, toilets, lifeguards, sunbeds and restaurants overlooking it.
Parking Carabeo is one of the options we recommend, as it is relatively central and affordable. In summer it helps to arrive a little earlier, and the centre itself is easiest on foot.
