Frigiliana Day Trip from Nerja: Our Favourite White Village

Our favourite easy day out from Nerja: the white mountain village of Frigiliana, what to look out for, when to go and two places we love to eat.

Frigiliana is probably the easiest day-trip recommendation we can give from Nerja. It is a beautiful white village in the hills, a short drive from town, with narrow streets, flowers, small shops and lovely places to stop for coffee, lunch or a drink. Here is how we like to spend a day there.

Why Frigiliana is our favourite white village

There are many pretty villages in Andalucía, but Frigiliana wins for us because it is so close and so easy. You do not need to plan a full expedition. You can decide over breakfast that you fancy it and be wandering the lanes not long after.

On a clear day you can even see towards Frigiliana from parts of the coast near our house, which makes it feel like a natural part of any stay in Nerja.

How to explore Frigiliana

We like going without too much of a plan. Wander through the streets, follow the little lanes, stop when something catches your eye and simply enjoy the atmosphere. The village rewards slow walking more than ticking things off a list.

  • Wear comfortable shoes, as the streets climb and twist.
  • Give yourself a few hours, so there is time to sit down somewhere.
  • Bring a little curiosity: the best corners are often down the side lanes.

When to visit Frigiliana

In summer, go in the morning or later in the afternoon. The middle of a hot day is not the time for climbing white streets in full sun. We follow the same rule for most of our outings in summer: plan walks around the cooler parts of the day and keep the hottest hours for a long lunch, the pool or a siesta.

Outside summer you have more freedom, and a late morning visit followed by lunch is hard to beat.

What to look out for in Frigiliana

As you wander, keep an eye out for a few highlights:

  • Fuente Vieja, the old fountain.
  • Real Expósito.
  • San Antonio church.
  • The old family buildings that give the village its character.
  • The remains of the Moorish castle.

You do not need a strict route between them. Most visitors find these simply by following the streets, and we think that is the nicest way to do it. Stop for a coffee or a drink along the way whenever a terrace looks inviting.

Where to eat in Frigiliana

La Posada Morisca

A beautiful option for lunch or dinner, combining local character with views. We recommend it as a special place to eat while you are visiting the village, especially if you want to make a proper meal of the day.

The Garden

Here the setting is part of the experience: a rooftop view over Frigiliana and a relaxed meal. We loved the overall experience and the food. It may not be the cheapest option, but the atmosphere is special, and it is a lovely choice if you are celebrating or simply want to linger.

If you would rather eat back on the coast, our guide to restaurants in Nerja has plenty of ideas for the evening.

A simple Frigiliana day from Nerja

  • Morning: a coffee in Nerja, then the short drive up to Frigiliana.
  • Late morning: wander the lanes, find Fuente Vieja and San Antonio church.
  • Lunch: a long lunch at La Posada Morisca or The Garden.
  • Afternoon: back down to the coast for a swim or a rest on the terrace.
  • Evening: a drink at the Balcón de Europa. See our post on sunset drinks in Nerja.

More day trips from Nerja

Frigiliana is the easiest, but it is not the only good day out. If you want to go further, Granada and the Alhambra, the Caminito del Rey, Ronda and Setenil, and Marina del Este are all within reach. We cover them in our guide to day trips from Nerja. Closer to home, the Nerja caves make another easy half day.

Frigiliana and back to the terrace

Part of the pleasure of a morning in Frigiliana is coming home afterwards. From our house in Ladera del Mar, just outside the centre of Nerja, you are back on your own sea-view terrace in time for a swim and a slow afternoon. If that sounds good, check availability at Casa Joya.
